‘Spelling Bee’ bounces onto Baldwinsville Theatre Guild stage (Review)

What monster (or school teacher) decided it would be fun to stand kids up one at a time on a stage and force them to spell P-O-L-Y-S-Y-L-L-A-B-I-C words of probably foreign origin before audience of friends, relatives, and other gawking adults all holding their collective breath. Id also like to know if all spellers have their entire life flash before their eyes when standing behind the microphone or is it just in the very funny musical The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee? The mostly tuneful songs by William Finn (the Falsettos trilogy, A New Brain) carry a lot of the characters introspection, while most of the action of Rachel Sheinkins book is broadly farcical. Loopy hippy child Leaf Coneybear, (Kilian Crowley), dressed in clothes hes made himself, sings that, Im Not That Smart, then spells words while in a gut-bustingly funny trance.
