To be eligible for an All-Academic award, a team must have started at least five runners at an NCAA Division I Regional cross country meet and have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. Leading the way were a pair of 4.00 efforts from junior Emily Houghton (psychology) and sophomore Shelbi Wuss (biochemistry). The men just missed on a record-high semester in the classroom, posting the second-highest GPA for the team with a 3.41, led by Patriot League Academic All-League honoree Matthew Rainey (CLEG). Five members of the men's squad closed with at least a 3.50 semester GPA with Rainey, junior Caleb Brown (applied mathematics), junior Gerard D'Ambrosio III (business administration), sophomore John Pagliaro (international studies), and senior Liam Purdy (health promotion management).
For the second consecutive semester, the AU cross country and track women's team led the way in the classroom, posting a single-season department record 3.77 GPA behind a pair of 4.00's from junior Emily Houghton (psychology) and sophomore Shelbi Wuss (biochemistry). Big Bash chief Kim McConnie believes clubs need to come to terms with signing star players on shorter deals, suggesting the "trade off" of a longer season must be flexibility. The KFC BBL's expansion from 35 games two seasons ago to 59 this summer has seen the length of the competition extend to two months, providing an added challenge for teams looking to secure elite international talent. While the BBL's star power remains high with the presence of T20 guns Rashid Khan, Brendon McCullum and Jos Buttler this season, the threat of overlapping domestic T20 leagues has become increasingly apparent. De Villiers and Russell were also among a host of big names, including Mitchell Johnson who cited a longer season in his decision to not play for the Scorchers in BBL08, that signed on for a lucrative UAE T20 league before it was eventually cancelled.
The Auburn Tigers will have to replace QB Jarrett Stidham for the 2019 season, and have some interesting options like Joey Gatewood, Malik Willis, Bo Nix and Cord Sandberg on the roster. Per a story posted on Oklahoma transfer QB Austin Kendalls Instagram page, Kendall is in Auburn on Monday evening: Kendall has been at Oklahoma the past three years, serving as a backup for Heisman-winning quarterbacks Baker Mayfield and Kyler Murray. The Sooners are also looking into some graduate transfer options for the 2019 season, though, so perhaps Kendall saw the writing on the wall.
Toms River North is 5-0 and heads for the Boresch Duals at Newton where Top 20 powers Paulsboro, Hanover Park, South Plainfield and Kingsway will also be wrestling Saturday. "What lost the match for us was a couple of guys having Velcro on their backs," said Jackson Memorial head coach Doug Withstandley. The match started at 285 pounds where Jackson Memorial received a fall from bumped-up Brad Galassi and then a 7-2 decision from Brett Blaess at 106.
League play begins this weekend with a pair of televised games Friday night: Ball State at Toledo at 7 p.m., and Buffalo at Eastern Michigan at 9 p.m,. Outlook: Ranked 20th by the Associated Press, the Bulls are the class of the league, but could be vulnerable to a few MAC teams with comparable size, athleticism and depth. Outlook: Surprisingly good defense combined with explosive firepower at every position, led by guard Jaelan Sanford (17.8 ppg) make coach Tod Kowalczyks Rockets a fan favorite. Kent State's Jalen Avery (0) looks to pass around Xavier's Tyrique Jones (0) in the first half of an NCAA college basketball game, Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2017, in Cincinnati.
Quarterback Drew Lock has grown into a top NFL prospect over the past two seasons, and the team is bowl-eligible for the second straight year in 2018, but theres been no sense that Missouri of late is competing for anything except to edge above .500. On Tuesday evening, Missouri got a very nice thing: the news that former Clemson quarterback Kelly Bryant, immediately eligible to play in 2019, picked Columbia as his transfer destination for his final year of college ball. He picked Mizzou over Auburn, Mississippi State, Arkansas and North Carolina, giving the Tigers a quarterback whos taken a team to the College Football Playoff. Tight end Albert Okwuegbunam just lost his position coach, Joe Jon Finley, to Texas A&M, and he hasnt said if hell leave early for the NFL.
