Then, in their second contest of the day, they rode a pair of home runs for junior Alex Kidwiler and seven strong frames from graduate student Joe Thompson en route to a 5-1 win over non-conference opponent Marymount University. Group of 5 early conference primer: Biggest games, Heisman hopefuls and one big prediction

UCF didn't claim a national championship in 2018, but the Knights' 25-game win streak did accelerate discussions of expansion to more inclusive College Football Playoff even for the Group of 5 conferences. In order to keep that Playoff expansion talk rolling, Group of 5 teams need to score big nonconference regular-season and bowl victories and it wouldn't hurt if another UCF emerged this season. The Knights aren't going anywhere, and there's quarterback intrigue in Orlando with the addition of Notre Dame transfer Brandon Wimbush, who will fight for the starting job even if McKenzie Milton (leg) returns healthy. The Broncos are a perennial contender on this list, but they will move on from quarterback Brett Rypien and star running back Alexander Mattison, who left early for the NFL Draft.

Sun Belt Conference

Sophomore defensive back Bralen Trahan contributed in a big way as one of six players to record six tackles to compliment an interception that he returned 63 yards. From there, the offense gained 13 yards to set up a 43-yard field goal for senior kicker Kyle Pfau, which he hit to pull Louisiana within 14 points, 24-10, at halftime. Following a big fourth-down stop on Tulane's opening drive, the Louisiana offense took over and got going early when Nunez hit Bradley for 26 yards to move into Green Wave territory. Four plays later, sophomore running back Elijah Mitchell found the end zone for the 13th time this season, scoring from three yards out to pull the Cajuns within 24-17.

Sun Belt Championship Pregame Quotes

We knew that there was going to be a chance that we could possibly be in this conference championship, so it was just putting all the pieces of the puzzle back together and finishing strong so we could get to this point at where we're at. Conference USA and the Mid-American are below us.As I finish out my career here at the Sun Belt, if there's one thing I hope I've left behind, it's this scheduling philosophy. As much as the committee talks about the eye test and taking injuries into consideration and various factors, with Zac (Thomas) not in there after the first series, who knows what happens in that game. They have a really good quarterback, not only can he beat you with his arm, but he's got great mobility and can extend the play and he's a big threat to run the ball as well.
