A former lawyer for the Oregon legislature filed a whistleblower lawsuit Friday against the states two most powerful lawmakers, according to a report in Willamette Week. Gail Stevens claims that Senate President Peter Courtney, D-Salem, and House Speaker Tina Kotek, D-Portland, failed to protect her from retaliation after she raised concerns about discrimination, unlawful conduct, abuses of power, and mishandling of sexual harassment reports. The supervising attorney then joined in the retaliation, according to the suit, giving Stevens difficult assignments, unfairly scrutinized her work, and implying an improper relationship with a lawmaker. The bulk of the Bureau of Labor and Industries findings centered on improper behavior by former Sen. Jeff Kruse, who resigned in 2018 after an investigation revealed he may have sexually harassed as many as 15 women in the capitol.
