During Isaiah Vasquezs sentencing hearing in state District Court, prosecutors and defense attorneys presented opposing theories in hopes of explaining the shooting death of Carla Estrada. According to police, Vasquez pulled out a gun as an argument between his girlfriend and Estrada escalated into a physical fight during a party at a home near Unser and Arenal SW. When Vasquez and his girlfriend were asked to leave the party, he fired a shot into the air before jumping into a Dodge Charger. Alford pleas allow a defendant to acknowledge that sufficient evidence exists to support a conviction while maintaining innocence.
The city of Albuquerque has cut in half a massive backlog of untested sexual assault evidence kits that had been growing since the 1980s, Mayor Tim Keller announced Sunday. Susana Martinez said that the state forensic lab had cleared its untested kits, which accounted for about a quarter of the backlog uncovered in a special audit. As the workload shifts to detectives and prosecutors, both APD and the DAs Office are looking to add personnel to begin investigating cases around the tested evidence kits. Thats a relief to Connie Monahan, the statewide Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner coordinator, who said that adding more resources may mean tested kits dont find themselves stuck in a new backlog.
It took nearly 140 minutes of action to get a goal over the two legs in the 2018 Liga MX Apertura final but when the moment finally came, Edson Alvarez was more than up to the task, curling a beautiful shot past Cruz Azul goalkeeper Jose de Jesus Coronaand added a second in the waning minutesto secure Club America its record 13th title. Corona opted for a short pass out of the box on a goal kick, immediately putting Ivan Marcone in danger as he was descended upon by Oribe Peralta. Peralta was able to knick the ball off Marcone and set up Alvarez, who had plenty of time and space to curl the winner past Corona. Alvarez effectively secured America's title over its Mexico City rival after he pounced on a saved shot in the 90th minute.

The Courier Post reported Sunday that the team decided to fire Hakstol and replace him with former Blackhawks coach Quenneville. Hakstol has led Philadelphia to a 12154 record this season, which puts them last in the Eastern Conference with 28 points. Quenneville, a three-time Stanley Cup champion with the Blackhawks, was fired by Chicago in November after a rough start to the season. The Flyers haven't won the Stanley Cup since coach Fred Shero led the team to back-to-back championships in 1974 and 1975.
One issue likely to get a lot of attention in this first budget is Medicaid -- the single largest source of health-care coverage in the state -- covering one out of four Ohioans. Reducing the number of uninsured children in Ohio has always been a bipartisan priority because of the connection between health-care coverage and success in school and life. Many child advocates welcomed the fact one of the very first appointments announced by DeWine was LeeAnne Cornyn as his director of childrens initiatives. So it will be critical for the new administration to quickly get a handle on these programs and their performance so they can be focused on providing an opportunity to every Ohio child -- despite their circumstances, health or disability.

The Archdiocese of Detroit released a statement Saturday saying that Father Don LaCuesta will not be allowed to preside over funerals in the near future and would get help to become a better minister in difficult situations, according to the New York Times. But Jeff and Linda Hullibarger, the parents of Maison, 18, say the priests words only compounded the pain of losing their son. They tell The Blade they want LaCuesta removed from his position at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Temperance because theyre concerned he will cause emotional harm to more families. Charles Rubey, founder and director of Loving Outreach to Survivors of Suicide, tells The Blade that LaCuesta handled the funeral poorly.
After a loosey-goosey start that put them in a two-goal hole, the Sharks tightened up their game, roared back against a downtrodden Blackhawks squad and left Chicago with a 7-3 victory. It started at the end of the first period when San Jose was on the penalty kill with both Evander Kane and Timo Meier in the box. The Blackhawks visibly began to unravel, which led to David Kampf going to the sin bin for playing with a broken stick. Barclay Goodrow was in perfect position in front of Ward to redirect Justin Brauns laser of a shot from the blue line in the second period.
